In this session Frazer-Nash will describe our recent review of the Government’s Support for Maritime Training (SMarT) scheme, which is paid to shipping companies for training Officers and ratings. The review, carried out for the Department for Transport, examined the costs of training, determined its current value for money; established what barriers existed in the training pipeline, and what interventions could overcome these. Finally it looked at alternative approaches for supporting seafarer training through comparison with other countries and industry sectors.

In this session Frazer-Nash give an overview of the work, our findings and recommendations, based on a broad stakeholder analysis and our perspective as an independent engineering consultancy with experience combining experience from across heavy industries including marine.
